Annual Health Checks
The best form of treatment is prevention.
The types of things that we look at in a general check-up are: dental health, arthritis assessment, weight management, skin checks, lump checks, and ensuring vaccinations, worming and flea treatments are all up to date.
In addition to this, we go over the general care model and ensure that you leave confident in caring for your companion as they age. All your questions will be answered.
Vaccinations
Vaccinations are the main prevention for viral infections and are required to prevent the spread of diseases in the community. Boarding, training and doggy day care facilities will require up to date vaccinations.
Dogs
The routine C5 vaccination covers dogs for Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Distemper and the two main strains of Canine Cough.
Cats
The Annual F4 vaccination covers Feline Herpesvirus & Calicivirus, Panleukopaenia and Chlamydia.
Cats that spend time outdoors should be vaccinated against FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). FIV is a devastating virus spread via cat fighting.
Rabbits
The six monthly Cyclap vaccine protects rabbits from rabbit viral hemorrhagic disease (released into the wild rabbit population to keep their numbers down).
Ferrets
Ferrets can become infected by the same Distemper virus that infects dogs.
We recommend annual vaccination of ferrets against distemper.
Heartworm Protection
Heartworm is one of the most dangerous parasites in Australia. It is spread by mosquitoes so your pet doesn’t need contact with other animals to become infected. It is becoming more prevalent in Melbourne due to the warming climate and recent mosquito plagues. Most monthly parasite products include heartworm in their treatment. If you don’t use these products or if you are forgetful, the popular yearly Proheart injection would be a great option.
Fleas
Fleas are the most “successful” parasite in Melbourne and the main cause of severe skin allergies in cats and dogs. Each flea can lay up to 300 eggs and each egg can remain dormant for up to 5 months. Flea products area available from our clinic.
Intestinal Worms
Worms live in the intestine of your pet. Rarely some will spread to humans and affect organs such as the liver, skin and eyes. Young children are most commonly affected. Worming products are available from our clinic.
